Benefits of Drinking Rooibos Tea

A few good reasons to drink rooibos tea
Imagine you had to face the harsh elements every day without any shelter. Many of us won’t do well if we were constantly exposed to the scorching sun, strong winds, and icy weather conditions without any protection. However, every day the rooibos plant, which only grows in the Cederberg region in South Africa, faces these conditions and worse, and it thrives! The reason for this plant’s amazing resilience is its ability to produce potent antioxidants that protect it from ruthless weather conditions. Every time you drink a cup of rooibos, the same antioxidants that protect the plant, protect you.

1. Rooibos is good for your heart and other organs.

A study done by Spanish researchers, published in the Phytomedicine journal, shows that drinking rooibos can prevent the development of heart disease. The research found that rooibos stops the liver from storing excessive fat around the heart and other major organs. Fat stored around the heart may cause the narrowing and hardening of arteries which may lead to cardiovascular disease, according to a study published in the journal Radiology.

2. Rooibos may prevent and treat diabetes.

Another study in the Phytomedicine journal, found that rooibos can combat type 2 diabetes in rats, and possibly in humans. Although further studies are necessary, study leader Dr Johan Louw believes that rooibos will also be beneficial to humans suffering from type 2 diabetes. The researchers used green rooibos, which is unfermented rooibos, in the studies. Green rooibos contains more antioxidants than the fermented, or traditional varieties.

3. Rooibos may help prevent cancer.

On the South African Rooibos Council’s website, Prof. Jeanine Marnewick of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology says that both fermented and green rooibos can help slow down the development of cancer cells.

“We have been investigating the effect of rooibos on various kinds of cancer for years and have been able to prove the benefits of rooibos in preventing or slowing down different kinds of cancer,” says Marnewick. “We have found that green rooibos significantly inhibits the growth of cancer cells, and that traditional rooibos also achieves this effect, albeit at a slightly lower rate.”

Marnewick recommends drinking six cups of rooibos tea a day to ensure the ultimate health benefits.
